Lost in the Sauce

October 7, 2019

I made it to the Mexico MTC! It was quite the journey trying to get here though. The morning I left, one of my flights got canceled and my entire itinerary got changed at the last minute, so it was pretty stressful. One of my planes landed 10 minutes AFTER my next plane started boarding so I had to sprint through the airport. I met up with some missionaries at the plane and I was all sweaty and gross... kinda embarrassing. I finally made it, and my companion didnt show up! Theres 4 missionaries in my dorm, and only 2 of us showed up, but we werent companions. We decided to just be temporary companions until we figure out what to do haha. But the next day, both our companions walked in and said that their flights got canceled too so they had been traveling for like... a long time. So they were just a whole day late. My P day is on Wednesdays, but since today is General Conference and its kinda like a church holiday, we are allowed to call home and write emails! My companion is Elder Martin! I call him Elder Martín (like... Marteen) because it sounds more Spanish. He calls me Elder Merriam (like Merriam Websters dictionary). Elder Martin is from California, and he is so cool! He is really good at Spanish so he has been helping me 1 on 1, in addition to the classes we have every day. I feel super blessed to have the smartest and coolest companion in my district, especially because he is so willing to help me with everything Spanish related. But this whole week has been one of the hardest weeks of my whole life. The MTC has really high expectations for us when it comes to learning Spanish. Like... 2 days in, I already knew how to pray in Spanish and I had the entire First Vision memorized in Spanish. I have hundreds of vocab and phrases to memorize each day, and it is very overwhelming considering we are too busy to even study! Its just been a LOT. But I am learning quickly and I am pretty optimistic that I can do it in 6 weeks. As Elder Martin said, we're working so hard, we're getting "lost in the sauce".

NOW FOR THE FUN STUFF! We get gym time every day, and me and my companion usually play ultimate frisbee with a bunch of other people, and its super fun! And also, the people in my casa all had a movie night last night. So theres like 5 dorms in each casa, and each dorm has 4 elders. So we all met up in the living room, brought our pillows, blankets, and snacks and we watched the book of Mormon videos on someones ipad. It was so fun haha, and we all wore our floral ties around our foreheads because we arent allowed to wear those at the MTC. So yeah, the people I am living with are all super fun! Also, the food here is no bueno. Most of the stuff is unidentifiable, but occasionally we get something that tastes alright. Yesterday for breakfast they gave us quesdallias? I think? Except it was a tortilla with little to no cheese, lettuce, and mashed potatoes all inside the quesadilla. It was the weirdest thing. Gracias familia por la paqueta! Thanks for the package mom and dad, now I am LOADED with snacks. Anyway, so much has happened this week. I didnt even talk about half of all the cool stuff that has been going on, but I dont want to bore everyone with a crazy long email, so thats all for now. Keep your emails coming because I love reading them. Adios!
Love,
Elder Webster

August 9, 2021 Hello everyone! I hope you all had a great week! I'm writing this email having spent 110% of my energy this week on the work of the Lord. I almost have no energy left other than the promise in Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me". I'm going into my 6th month with little sleep and an enormous workload, and It's catching up to me now, but I'll be okay. I seriously feel like the only thing keeping me going is Jesus Christ, which is an incredible feeling having given everything to the Lord. I wouldn't trade it for the world. I'm definitely not complaining, but I'm insanely grateful for the opportunity to serve. There is nothing more fulfilling than this work, and even though I feel like I've given everything I have, I still wish I could give more. We picked up 31 new missionaries from the airport this week! Having to organize the logistics for their travel, hotel, and meals was pretty chaotic,...

Goodbye New York City

September 13, 2021 It pains me to say that this was my last week as a missionary. We had a general authority (Elder Bassett) visit the mission all week, and Elder Call and I were in charge of the technology. I could probably write a whole email about all the miracles, struggles, and work that went into that. Maybe that's a story for another day. We picked up my replacement, Elder Wolfgramm, and have been training him on some things before I go. It has been an absolute blast being in a trio with them. I reflected a lot this week on the past 2 years and the things I have learned. I want to make a brief summary of my mission and say what I learned from each of my areas and companions! It will probably be boring for you, but it's mostly just for me to write down some thoughts to look back on one day haha. Mexico MTC - Elder Martin I learned spanish, kinda. Elder Martin has also taught me a lot about friendship and loyalty. He is SUCH a good friend. I am still learning from him ev...

EMERGENCY *MUST READ*

November 9, 2020 What's up!!!! I'm not sure if you all heard, but the elections were this week. We don't watch the news or anything so I received the update when the ENTIRE city went out onto the streets with cowbells, trumpets, frying pans, and other noisemakers to celebrate. It was crazy. New York is very very very blue. That's all I will say. I emailed President Teuscher about my concerns with my companion's obedience, and he said "I will see what I can do". Well he actually did a LOT to help! He made a whole PowerPoint presentation on obedience and shared it in a mission-wide devotional. We also had a mission leadership meeting in Queens this week and had a big discussion about how to help the 27 new incoming missionaries be obedient... the answer: WE ARE OBEDIENT OURSELVES. We made plans to do a 40 day fast as a mission from EVERYTHING we may cut corners on when it comes to rules. Anyway, I feel like my emails to President sparked a big mission-wide f...
